The Bogeys

"Give it a Nudge"

Game 4, 29th of July 2012 @ Nudgee South.

One way to line them up.
Nice work Mark

 CONGRATULATIONS PATTY

Big congratulations to all the Bogeys and yes that means you. We had our fourth game and it's good to see everyone up for a crack. Big thanks also to our new players, Allen Beahan, Mark Tooker, Dean Covey and Glen Cross. We always like to see the team get bigger so thanks again and I hope we see you guys in up and coming games.

So this round was our first handicapped round, which had everyone guessing who was going to take out the first win???  JT was the only Bogey to have played the course before, so it was a real even playing field. Having said that, the quality of golf was excellent! A lot of personal bests which is great to see.
Nice shirt Crossy

It was the Bogeys first game at a "real" golf course. So I probably should have mentioned before the game to make sure everyone had collared shirts (hey Scotty and Crossy! at least you guys got some nice new flash shirts). It was good to go somewhere with booked in T times and marshals etc. I thought we would be in for a quick game (4.5 hrs) but with lots of traffic in front of us it slowed to just over 5 hrs, not too bad. A late T off time also made it feel a bit longer so I'll endeavour for earlier T times in the future (before 8:30). I thought the course was great with good greens, open trees and not too much water, (even though I found it twice) so I think we might head back sooner rather than later.

Looking sharp Scotty

Closest Pin

The first hole of the day was a 120m par 3 so game on early. So the first group was up and Rob was the only ball on the green from the T. Along way out the back probably 10-15m away, its not what I'd really call close to the pin, but on! So from the reports I got (not many) Phil A was painfully close to taking the prize but ended up just off the cut. So good on me for taking out the first six pack! Well done Rob. Ha.

One down, one to go.

The next chance to win a six pack came on the third hole, 145m par 3. This length normally sorts things out. First group up to the T and Dean smacks a beauty right up there, but with a bunker at the front it was hard to see how close he was. So then Rob jumped up with his trusty 7 iron and smacked a good one up there as well (felt great). On closer inspection Rob had pipped Dean by 2 or 3m and was only 2 to 3m away from the pin (a lot better than the first hole). So I had no reports of any close calls after that and had to take the last six pack up for grabs. Cheers boys.

The Round

I think most guys had a good day of it and here are some of my highlights from the scorecards. But well done to everyone.
  • Phil Antrobus shot 82 off the stick and was only 2 over after the first 9 holes. He was unlucky to have a ball mysteriously go missing, which really messed up his mojo (some f#*%!r must have picked it up)
  • Kris Rogers scored a great par on the long par 3 7th hole. Well done mate.
  • Scott Bramley a birdie on the par 4 15th. Thats the way mate adding to the birdie tally.
  • Dean Covey Shot 83 off the stick, 2 over on the back nine and added to the birdie tally on the 15th also. Great game Dean you've won yourself a super low handicap. Ha
  • JT and Phil Smith both having great games and tying for second on -9.
  • Patty Hopokingi broke the 90's and shot 88 off the stick.
 The Results

  1.   Patty                    -14
  2.  Phil S and JT       -9
  3.  Phil A                   -7
  4.  Rob H                  -5
  5. Kris                      -4
  6.  Ryan                    +6
  7.    Scotty                   +15

Rob and Pat with the prizes.
Yum. Coopers a nice drop I must say. Don't drink them all at once Pat.

I was a bit nervous how the scores were going to turn out to be honest (being the guy who made them). The whole idea of a handicap system is to make an even playing field so any body having an above average game has a chance of winning (or acknowledgement of having a good game) . It's definitely not about who is the best golfer, which is good because we would probably all get towelled up each game by Phil Antrobus (he had a cracker game on the weekend, 12 over for the round and has shot the best score off the stick each game). I also heard a rumour that we might get a new member who plays off scratch, which would be great to see. So each game is about your own performance compared to your average.

Our first winner Patty is a great example of how a personal above average game gives you a great chance of winning a day. Patty's previous scores to date were 108, 104 and 96 which shows a great improvement over those games (cracking the 100 is a good effort). So from these scores his handicap was 32. So to shoot 88 this week shows what a blinder of a game he must have had. The guys shooting in the 80's will tell you how hard it is to drop shots from mid 90's to get in the 80's (like going from 120 to 100) so again well done Pat (your handicap is still in a good position, so keep shooting low scores).

So did the handicaps work?? Well I'd love to hear your comments so let me know. I would give it about 7.5 out of 10. If you take into consideration, some handicaps were only calculated on one or two games, it was ok. The more we play the better and more accurate they will become, so hang in there if you felt a little hard done by on the weekend.

So how will your handicap change?

(I thought I had previously posted all the info about scoring and the handicapping, but found that blog in my drafts so here is what I thought you all knew)

So it can move up and down depending on how well you play.
If you have a 31 shot handicap and you shoot 100 @ Par 72 = 28 over your net score for the day will be -3 (3 under par, well done).
So your H/C will change because you shot a better score. You will loose .5 shots per shots under your original. So 31 minus 3 x .5 = 29.5 rounded UP (for dropping shots) is 30

On the other side of the stick shooting over your H/C (31) say you get 110 @ Par 72 = 38 over you net score will be +7 (7 over probably not a winning score I hope).
So your H/C will change because you shot a worse score. You will gain .25 shots per shots over your original. So 31 plus 7 x .25 = 32.75 rounded DOWN (for gaining shots) is 32.

Ok one last thing on the Handicap. If you win the day (and I hope you do) you will lose shots as above plus one full stroke.

Scoring

I realise we're not playing for sheep stations, but there is no point of going to all the trouble of handicaps and prizes if it isn't right score to win. It is very easy to make a scoring mistake. 2 cards are better then 1. What I want to see at the end of a round is every bodies scores marked down on 2 different cards. In a more official club everybody would have a card of their own and would swap cards with your playing partner (your marker). Each card would be filled out with the player and markers score, so scores can be checked at the end of a round. If you never knew this, the next time you look at a card it will make a little more sense.

So as the Bogeys lets just make sure we have 2 cards per group and 2 scores for each player. On the weekend in our group we had a discrepancy of 2 shots between the cards for one player. After a quick recount amongst all the players in our group we soon realised the mistake and fixed the score. 2 shots could be the difference between winning or loosing undeservedly.

Remember that the Bogeys are about mates having a crack so keep the scores honest and count all your shots including the drops and lost balls. If you are unsure about how to score or what the rules are check with your playing group. Or if you have any questions give me a call. I'm all about whats fair for everyone.
