Handicaps are in!!!!
Well boys, three games down and we now we have official (Bogey) handicaps. More on that later.
The Game
Royal Birkdale again. This time starting on the Weston 9, (the blue 9 as I like to call it) and everyone's favourite the Westward 9 (yellow 9).
Big thanks to Scott B, Craig V and Ben M for joining the Bogeys for what was one of our best games yet. Big thanks also to the regulars, especially Pete, Pat and Rob for making the first 3 games.
Early Radar Check |
Well the weather looked a little suspect for the game, but turned out to be a corker. I think the cloud cover kept the masses away and dedicated loyal. Ha.
Still a handicapping round - the real buzz was around the closest the pins. Three up for grabs this week due to our poor display last game on the short holes.
First Par 3
First to T off this week, chosen by the almighty spinning T, was Rob. First hole, first closest pin opportunity. It's on! First shot, first closest the pin, (I'm feeling confident) my ball is on the green and that's all it took last week. Patty steps up and knocks 1 a little closer - great shot Pat. And that. Was that. Pat had claimed the first six pack. Well done mate.
Shot Patty! (Bugger) |
Second par 3
I know our group consisting of Gav, Pat and myself, didn't trouble closest pin on this hole. As for the group behind us, JT, Scotty and Craig, looking at where their balls ended up on the green you would have thought some pros had just rocked up. But, looking at the guys walking towards the green we realised it was just the boys. Ha. Great grouping guys, and low and behold Craig V. the newby cracked the closest and scored a cheap six pack for $2.50. Nice work Craig, great shot and I think you might be one to watch out for in games to come. The Shots......... |
The Boys........ |
Third Par 3
First par three in the yellow 9. Up the hill. Not much to mention from the first group. Then we hear the second group let out a bit of a yell. Here we go! I must admit its quite a hard hole, up hill, sloping green. Yeah not easy. But Scotty B, another newby nailed a corker shot, tamed the hole and claimed the third closest the pin. Well done mate, that was a great shot. As for the third group, Peter, Spaniard and Ben, what were you guys doing? Ha only kidding.
And the winners are....... Nice truck in the back ground. |

The Round
Big congrats to everyone. Overall the quality of golf and scoring has picked up. A couple of highlights to mention about the round.
- Dave C. 10 Bogeys in 1 round. Really showed good consistency, true Bogeyness and scoring ability (you might live up to all your claims of golf supremacy)
- Rob H. 2 Birdies in 1 round. Doubled the Bogeys birdie record in 1 swoop. What a legend.. HA
Good Day For it.. |
I tried to work out a fair system to calculate handicaps for Bogeys who have played less than 3 games. I based it on the 3 guys who have played 3 games. So here it goes.
So from the difference in scores from first round to third round, of 3 guys with 3 rounds gave an average of 10. So by the nature of our group and by the scores recorded so far, I thought this would be a good factor in predicting an average rate of improvement. From this a 1 game Bogeys handicap will be their first score over par minus 10.
eg On a par 70 course you shoot 105 which = 35 over, minus 10, your handicap is 25.
What about 2 gamers? Simply put, 10 divided by 3 equals 3.333. Round down to 3. Your average over your 2 games minus 3 for average improvement.
eg On a par 70 course you shoot 105 one week, then 100 the next week = 65 over (total over 2 weeks) divided by 2 equals 32.5 round up to 33 then minus 3 for average improvement, your handicap is 30.
So I am open to suggestions on the handicapping. If you can convince me or the majority of our group on a more fair system I'm all for it. It must be fair to the majority though. I know a couple of you might be a little hard done by and vice versa.
Just remember it's our club and we all make the rules, I'd love to hear your comments. I think the handicaps will level out the more we play (hopefully) so hang in there.
